Note Reading Practice
Note reading is a speed skill. You either know the note the moment you see it, or you are counting lines while the music keeps going. You do not learn it by understanding it; you learn it by doing it a few hundred times.
The Trainers
Each link opens in a new tab.
1. Bass Clef Practice 2. Treble Clef Practice 3. Mixed Treble and Bass PracticeKeyboard trainers, for the first week of the unit:
- Keyboard Identification — you see a note name and click the key.
- Keyboard Reverse — you see a key and name the note.
How to Practice
- Start with the clef you are worse at. Finish on the mixed exercise — that is the one that looks like the quiz.
- Aim for a perfect score twice on each clef, then beat your own time.
- The bass clef is not optional. Your bass lines are written in it.
The Quiz
The music reading and form quiz covers three things:
- Note reading — naming notes in treble and bass clef.
- Form — binary (AB) versus ternary (ABA).
- Tonic and dominant — tonic is home; dominant pulls back home.
Review pages: Music Reading 101 and Melody and Form. A practice quiz is posted in CTLS the day before.
